I met a young NT today.
A man and two boys came in to the diner and sat at the table closest to us. The boys were about 8 and 12.
They ordered and then they were started playing 20 questions. The older boy had picked the thing. (Is it bigger than this table? No.)
I missed a few questions and then tuned back in.
- Is it in the bathroom? (sometimes)
- Is it alive? (Yes, I think so)
- Is it bigger than Dad's hand? (yes)
The younger boy was trying to work out possibilities. The older boy decided to give him some hints and carefully demonstrated, using a ketchup bottle, that the younger brother was thinking of "bigger" in only one dimension.
"You're thinking only side to side. You need to think up and down as well."
Dad and brother were getting stumped. I had a pretty good idea where this was going.
I looked over as Rich and I were getting up to leave and said, "Ask him if it's in the bathroom right now.'
The boy's eyebrows went up. Dad asked. The answer was (as I expected) "No".
The Dad said "we're running out of questions".
I said "I'm going to guess it's Dad's foot (or some other part. :-)
The boy looked surprised and pleased. He shook his head slightly and whispered to his Dad. (Hmm, yes, it was some other part. ;-)
I explained how I did it.
I said "Keep an eye on this one; his teachers will be calling you." The Dad said "They already are."
The boy looked at me and said "Yeah, one time I said {something I didn't catch} and my teacher didn't understand me!" I thought, "Get used to it kid."
(I like that kid.)
